This was the Črnivec pass. I've ridden it at least 70 times, which I don't remember riding the same route at any time in my sports career, let alone in one year. Most of these rides, however, were carried out during the epidemic anyway.

When I presented the idea of Everesting to my colleague Kristjan Hvala, he was immediately interested and how quickly we decided that it would be one of the t.i. corona challenges. At first we set a deadline towards the end of September 2020, then we were surprised by rain for two weekends in a row, and then for a shorter day. So we decided to postpone everesting to 2021.

Preparations for everesting somehow started as early as December 2020, as we switched from regional roads to Watopie Zwift virtual roads in the winter. My colleagues and I met twice a week at Zwift rounds, where we rode various stages, from more flat to clean sloping stages. During the ride itself, we were connected via the well-known Zoom or Skype. By doing this, we shortened our time and noticed more quickly who was the first to attack the slope, so that we could catch up with him in time. Everything went virtually until March this year, when in the spring temperatures of Zwift we replaced the virtual routes again with the actual ones on the surrounding roads.

Shortly after that, we set an everesting date and hoped for the best possible weather. In preparation for the challenge, I did three special stages in a month and a half. The first stage, a little over 170 km long and about 2,500 meters above sea level, was followed by a second stage with much smaller slopes with between 200 m and 400 m of ascent, which in the end resulted in a total of 3,500 altitude meters. In the end, to prepare for the everesting, I decided to do another field test, where the challenge itself was to take place. For the third stage, I cycled about 2/3 of the challenge, 5000 altitude meters and close to 110 km on the segment designated for the challenge. On the third stage, I also tried the food and drink I was used to on the bike. I soon realized that water and frutabele alone would not be enough to “conquer” Everest. After about 4,000 altitude meters, I started to "pick up" so much that I learned from my own experience what to eat and drink during this kind of effort.

I took the most active part in the preparations for everesting in the last three days before D-Day.

Three days until everesting

I did a short workout with one longer incline to get my legs a little used to it. During the day, I already started eating pasta with different sauces, ie. macaroni for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Two days until everesting

Two days before Everesting, I included isotonic drinks in my hydration. The reason is that I would be hydrated with just water, but I would excrete too many nutrients from my body, which I desperately need for such a feat.

One day until everesting

On the last day before Everesting, I ate and drank the same as the day before, ie hydration and macaroni and a little lighter rice for dinner. I also did a short ride during the day and took an afternoon nap as the start of the challenge was scheduled for 4:30 in the morning. That means I had to get up at 3:30 at the latest.

However, not everything went smoothly. Because when the devil has young, he has more. A week before the everesting, the front brake failed during the descent during training at approx. 70 km / h. If this were to happen on Everest, the challenge could end quickly. When I repaired the brake, I went for a ride on the last day before the start and ran over a small rock while driving. Everything looked innocent until I noticed cracks in the rear ring while cleaning the bike. Of course I panicked, where to find the last ring on the disc on Saturday afternoon ?! Luckily everything settled down and we practically found the last ring at the last minute and so I was able to ride it completely with my bike.

Everesting day

The clock struck 3:45 and it was time to head to Mt. Everest by bike. We had a base camp at Ambrož pod Krvavec, where we had agreed with the owners a few days earlier that we could park Team Kombi there, where all the necessary food, drinks, blankets in case of rain, spare clothes and spare bikes in case of a defect or any other crises.

In the morning, I ate two more eggs on the eye, a piece of bread with bacon, and some macaroni, which I was already tired of having eaten since Wednesday. At 4:45 I turned on the Garmin and Kristjan and I descended into the valley to Stiška vas, where we started the first ascent of the planned 23. The ascent itself was 4.6 km long, the altitude difference was 392 m and the average slope was about 8 to 9%.

So we started the ups and downs the first time, the second time, and when we finished the third time, we already had the first meal. I myself decided that as long as I can only eat t.i. hard food, I will practice this. So after each climb I ate 1/2 small bun with bacon or prosciutto, a little cheese and vegetable spread to keep everything from getting too dry. Each round I also received a new water bottle with a different liquid. We took turns with about 0.3 to 0.4 liters of isotonic drink or magnesium tablets or my favorite drink: lemon, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of sugar. By this I know that I have put enough energy into my body for the muscles, something against cramps and it’s even tastier for after the top. And so we "stitched" climb after climb.

Meanwhile, we were joined by friends from the cycling round and Sunday rides. It was great for the company to come, we just had to be careful that no one broke our rhythm and we would go too fast towards the top, which would "warm" us in a few hours. At base camp, we had a team preparing food and drink on a regular basis, so we were never hungry, let alone thirsty.

We drove the ascent for about 23 to 26 minutes, and we spent about 5 minutes for the descent to Stiška vas. The average ascent speed ranged between 11 and 12 km / h, and the average descent speed as high as 50 km / h. Well, when you drive uphill so many times, you have a fast average speed of 55km / h. Oops…

The weather, however, started to show its true face towards 2 pm, when it was almost 10 hours of driving behind us. By then a sunny but cold day had begun to spoil. Quite suddenly, dark clouds come from the Gorenjska side, and with them the rain, which quickly turns into a heavy downpour. The worst rain got us right on the 18th climb and we were forced to stop under the roof and check out at least the worst part. After an hour of waiting, which is not good for the legs, as the body cools down and cools down, of course, it was uncomfortable to go back down into the valley at a temperature that dropped to 5 ° C, and I was in cycling shorts and in an immediately soaked anorak. But those last five climbs that we still had left, we decided to ride because we knew we could.

And so in rainy and cold weather, on a completely wet road, we "kicked off" the last five ascents and finished the everesting in a good time of 12 hours and a few minutes.

Behind us is the successful completion of everesting, very tired legs, but great well-being, with an excellent support team that deserves special praise. There would be no everesting without you! I just pedaled myself after all, the rest was done by the team. Thanks.

Leon Obreza

    <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-af39326 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image-gallery"
